Penlan v Builth Wells 28th. April 2018

PENLAN SOUNDLY BEATEN BY BUILTH WELLS AND PORTRUGAL

Penlan were swamped on Saturday in their home encounter with Builth Wells. While already suffering from missing a number of key players, some of those that did turn out were still suffering from the after effects of a very successful weekend stag do last week in Portrugal, and no training in the meantime.

Builth Wells on the other hand were on top form and a well drilled and able team punished Penlan.  At just 5 minutes their efforts breached the Penlan defence for their first try and, by half time, another three followed at 15, 25, 35 and 37 minutes when on each occasion their competent passing and pace earned them the tries with a bonus point that, with 4 safe conversions, put them ahead by 33 – 0.

Although Penlan stepped up their game in the second half and almost breached the visitor’s goal line on two occasions, the Builth Wells defence proved impenetrable.  The visitor’s pressure continued though and they racked up 3 more converted tries at 7, 10 and 25 minutes with similar displays of sound passing at pace.  Sadly, Penlan could not prevent a whitewash that lead to their second highest loss of 0 – 54.

Penlan now face almost certain relegation at the end of a season that has seen them lose too many key players and not attain their usual standard.  It is to the credit of the remaining players that they have remained loyal despite their disadvantages.  It is easy to be part of a team when they are at their best but loyalty and character are shown by those who turn out to play and support when times are tough.  Supporters appreciate the challenge faced by their players and are proud of their continual loyalty in adversity.  Three more home fixtures await Penlan, the first in just 4 days on Wednesday evening against top table leaders Maesteg Celtic, who are well safe for promotion.  There is no question that this will be another big test for Penlan.
