BONUS WIN HAT TRICK FOR PENLAN
Penlan secured their third bonus point win in a row on Saturday, retaining their top table place with a maximum 15 points. They had been away to Cwmgors and last season they had come away with a narrow 22 – 25 win.
It was a great day for rugby as referee Mr. Huw David from Bridgend got the game underway with Cwmgors making the kick off. The home side had an early 3 point lead from a penalty at 5 minutes until Scott Davies equalised for Penlan at almost 20 minutes.
The tussle for the upper-hand went on until 25 minutes when Cwmgors had a lineout near their 10 metre. Penlan eventually won the ball and some fast passing saw centre Dominic Cambriani advance the ball well up field and feed it to Paul Owen who made a dodging sprint through the defence and go over the line for a try. Outside-half Scott Davies converted for a 3 – 10 Penlan lead.
Just 10 minutes later some fast passing by Penlan in an attack for the visitor’s line led to the ball reaching Stefan Cambriani on the wing who made an unstoppable sprint up the touch line from beyond the 22 to land a safe try near the corner.
Just 2 minutes later full back Luke Davies landed Penlan's third try from more fast Penlan passing that led to him getting the ball from a timely quick pass from second row Luke Brooks. Paul Owen safely converted to give Penlan the 3 – 22 lead at half-time.
In the early stages of the second half Penlan took their foot off the gas and let the home side back in the game. After 10 minutes they conceded a converted penalty try after Cwmgors had been camping on their line, to reduce their lead to 10 – 22.
Just before 20 minutes Cwmgors managed to push through the Penlan defence again to land another converted try that made Penlan’s lead a narrower 17 – 22.
With the two sudden shocks, Penlan got their head back in the game andextended their lead to 17 – 25 at 25 minutes from a Paul Owen penalty kick. Then they achieved their fourth, bonus winning try after winning ball at their lineout within the 22 and setting up a determined push for the line. Luke Brooks made a swift run through to secure the ball and eventually cross over for a fine try to secure the final safe win for Penlan by 17 to 30.
It was a good win for Penlan that kept their place at the top of the table for the present. Next week they face third placed Tondu at home which will present them with a challenge. Tondu are a unknown for Penlan so an interesting game could be in the offing.
