Pencoed v Penlan 12th. November 2016

PENLAN BEAT TOP PLACED PENCOED

Penlan beat Pencoed 6 – 20 in their away fixture on Saturday, landing three tries in the process.  Later in the afternoon Liam Williams was to land a fine try for Wales in their win against Argentina but he failed to match up to his elder brother, Steven Williams who scored two tries for Penlan.

An excellent day for rugby greeted Penlan at Pencoed with referee Steffan Davies from Clydach managing the game. Pencoed made the early 1.30 kick off and were to put the first three points on the board with a penalty at 5 minutes.

This spurred Penlan to respond with vigour and at 8 minutes, after persistent pressure and fast passing, centre Steven Williams went over at the corner flag for his first try for Penlan to go ahead by 3 – 5.

For most of the remaining first half Pencoed managed to keep the visitors at bay but Penlan were looking the better side and in the final minutes Steven Williams landed his second try after sustained Penlan pressure followed their lineout.  Paul Spowart made short work of the conversion kick to leave Penlan with a 3 – 12 lead at half time.

In the second half, Penlan supporters were heartened to see that their side had found form and were playing their classic team game.  Despite this, Pencoed initially kept the visitors at bay with the score just changing to 6 – 15 by 20 minutes when each side landed a penalty kick each, Penlan’s coming from Paul Spowart.

Pencoed were lying top of the league, having played in Division 1 last season and their strong play showed why but Penlan looked the stronger side and were playing with an instinctive fine team game.  Their good work finally paid dividends and sealed their win in the final quarter after second-row Kurt Velardo won the ball at a Penlan 5 metre lineout.  The ball was advanced by Penlan captain Rob Green and when Penlan first went over the line their try was held up.  A Penlan scrum followed on the 5 metre from which they set up a push that propelled Pencoed back over their line until flanker Ian Scrine grounded the ball to give his side the 6 – 20 win as the final whistle sounded.

It was a fine win for Penlan and signalled that their present form could present a strong threat against any side they will be playing. Despite their win, Penlan presently stay in seventh league place but, with 22 points they are just 6 points behind Pencoed, still in top place, but Penlan have a game in hand of all the sides ahead of them.

A weeks rest follows for all teams while Wales play Japan next Saturday until ttheir next game when they entertain Resolven at home on 26th. November with the earlier kick off time of 1.30pm.  Resolven are two points ahead of Penlan and secured a high scoring win on Saturday, so their encounter should prove to be an interesting game.
