BRAVE DISPLAY BY PENLAN AT HOME AGAINST MORRISTON

Penlan’s army of junior players formed a guard of honour for their senior players as they took to the field on the 50^th Anniversary of the club formation.

As the team formed up to face visitors Morriston they knew that they were facing a difficult game.  They were missing some key players from injuries sustained at Taibach the week before, Ian Scrine and Kurt Velardo had both suffered broken ankles with Robert Green also carrying an ankle injury. They were also short of forward players to such an extent that they had to start with uncontested scrums, meaning that they were unable to have any replacement players.

Before the game got underway all supporters joined the both teams in a minute of silence in tribute to Penlan member and friend Steve Peters who had recently died.  A loyal and well respected supporter Steve will be missed by all who knew him.

Referee Mr. Huw David got the game underway well on time on a windy day with some light showers.  At just 2 minutes Penlan were behind 0 – 3 when the visitors landed a successful penalty.  For the most of the rest of the first half it was a to and fro game with both teams having their chances, until at 35 minutes Morriston managed to breach the defence to score a corner try which they converted.

In the last minutes of the half Penlan clawed back points from two penalties scored by full-back Paul Spowart to make it a close 6 – 10 at half time.

Despite no replacements, Penlan held their heads up, hoping to get ahead in the second half but early on Morriston went further ahead with a penalty at 4 minutes and another corner try at 9 minutes to give them a 6 – 18 lead.

The rest of the second half was a tribute to Penlan as they managed to keep the Morriston visitors at bay but could not find a way to breach their defence.  In the final minute Morriston managed to land a third try to make the final score 6 – 23.

It was a second disappointing loss for Penlan but their supporters were proud of their display and determination not to give up despite the difficulties. Next week it is an away trip to face Maesteg Celtic which is likely to be another challenge for Penlan.
