The heavy rain from Storm Callum held off for Penlan’s home encounter with Aberavon Green Stars on Saturday although the wind was strong throughout. Referee Mr. David Swain from the Vale of Glamorgan got the game underway with Penlan making the kick-off on a pitch that had weathered the storm and was in good condition. Penlan knew from the start that it was going to be a challenging game as they struggled to field a full compliment of replacements and were, once again, playing as a side that were not used to playing as a team with some inexperienced players. Nevertheless they put on a gutsy performance and, on occasions, put third table placed Aberavon under pressure. The visitor’s set up proved too strong, however, and at 10 minutes they scored their first try. There were two more at 20 and 25 minutes which, with two conversions, gave them a strong 0 – 19 lead at half time. Penlan picked up some injuries which piled on the pressure and in the second half they conceded two more tries, one converted, to extend their rout. After the 15 minute mark their rampage was stemed as the Penlan defence proved more effective. Despite the Penlan pressure, which gave them good chances in the last quarter, they could not convert their efforts to points. It was a noble 0 – 31 defeat for Penlan who will seek to better their performance as the season progresses, but they are only too aware that it will be an uphill struggle.
