ANOTHER CLOSE LOSS FOR PENLAN EARNS A BONUS POINT

Penlan put up another gutsy performance at home against Ystradgynlais on Saturday despite being short of players.  Despite Birchgrove being able to release former Penlan players, Rob Green and Ryan Taylor on permit and Alex Tregembo on load from Waunarlwydd, Penlan only had one replacement to call on.  Penlan came up against a strong Ystradgynlais side but their pack was no match for the skill of Penlan who proved dominant throughout.  It was a great start for Penlan who, within a minute of the visitors making the kick off, put the first points on the board.  Having gained possession, Penlan went on the attack and when Rob Green got the ball he made a well placed kick that enabled winger Alex Tregembo to gather up.  Alex made a fine sprint up the wing and dodged around the only defender to land an excellent try.   Ystrad got over the initial shock and after some excellent passing by their backs, got through the defence to land a try at 7 minutes.  The safe conversion gave them the 5 - 7 lead.  There was a contest between the sides to get ahead for the remainder of the first half until the visitors added 3 points from a penalty at about 30 minutes for a 5 - 10 lead at half time.   In the second half it was a close contest during which Penlan put in a fine performance.  At 20 minutes Ystrad increased their lead to 5 - 13 from a second penalty.   The visiting spectators and coaches are notoriously voluble and, true to form, they were constantly seeking to influence the referee.  In any event the majority of decisions were going against Penlan who, in the main, succeeded in maintaining their discipline despite provocation.  As ever, they never let their heads fall and continued to push Ystrad to the wire.  Immediately before the final whistle Penlan were pressing for the goal line when they awarded a penalty.  A fine kick from outside-half Dafydd Pritchard left the final score at 8 - 13 which at least earned a bonus point for Penlan.  Once again it was a loss for Penlan but supporters left the field proud of the performance put in by their team despite the drawbacks.   Next week they will have another home game, this time against Taibach who are having a good run this season and will present another strong challenge.  Thanks to Colin Rush for his photos that have been uploaded to the gallery
