PENLAN SWAMPED AT HOME BY PENCOED
In their home encounter with Pencoed on Saturday, Penlan just did not find what they needed to make headway. With some key players injured and watching from the touchline it was always going to be a tough game but the fast Pencoed backs had the skill to consistently put Penlan at the disadvantage.
Referee Mr. Colin Kirkhouse got the game underway with the visitors making the kick off. It took them just 4 minutes to score at the corner after some fast passing to give them a 5 point lead. Penlan came back at just before 20 minutes when they won ball from their lineout just inside the 22. They set up a charge for the line which breached the defence to allow second row Kurt Velardo score his fifth try of the season (equal first place with Adam Glover), and put Penlan on an equal 5 points.
The pressure on Penlan was constant though and at 25 and 35 minutes the visitor’s fast passing breached the Penlan defence to let them land tries at the corner flag and give them a 5 – 15 lead at half time. At 7 minutes into the second half they advanced their score to 18 points from a safe penalty but it was not until the 35 minute mark that they breached the Penlan defence again and score their bonus point earning fourth try after a weaving run to land under the posts. The safe conversion gave them the resounding 5 – 25 win at the final whistle. Despite their home advantage, Penlan had conceded an important game in their end of season relegation battle. With 4 home games till left to play Penlan can still statistically avoid relegation but it is going to be a hard task in the circumstances.
